    Wrapping Up: The 2014 New York Travel Festival

    nytf logoThis past weekend, April 26th and 27th, I attended and spoke at the annual NY Travel Festival. The weekend was a productive and interesting look at the state of the Travel, Adventure, and Travel Media industry, and featured informative sessions from industry leaders including the Travel 2.0 group, G Adventures, Matador Network, and AFAR Media, among many others. A few wrapups and followups from the festival:

    I appeared at the event as the resident expert on Antarctic Adventure and Expedition Travel, leading two sessions of one-on-one consulting, as well as doing featured talk on my experience living and working in Antarctica, and how future adventure travelers can make their own way to the frozen continent.     Exploring Earth’s Most Extreme Continent – Antarctica.

    During the ’12-’13 Austral Summer, Jeffrey Donenfeld deployed with the United States Antarctic Program to live and work at the most remote outpost of humanity, in the middle of the highest, coldest, windiest, and driest desert in the world – at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, South Pole, Antarctica. Live on the station was extreme in every sense – extreme weather conditions, extremely cold, extreme science, and extremely fun. The travelwear is built with a variety of hidden zippers and buttons, providing secure storage for travelers, while offering modern and versatile style. I was particularly impressed with the feel of the quick-dry nylon fabric used in their line of button-down shirts – the fabric feels and moves like fine cotton, but is actually synthetic and dries quickly. I’m yet to actually field-test their gear, but am looking forward to getting it out there and publishing my notes soon.

    A festival to bring out the adventurer in all of us, OutdoorFest provides a space for the outdoor community to share our passions. We’ll spend ten days kayaking on the Hudson, running through natural forest, and photographing wildlife, all within city boundaries. Through these events, we can connect with others who share our interest, discover a new sport, and champion healthy, active lifestyles.

    Continuing on Amazon’s huge week, they’re now introducing to the public their new “Product Ads”. The new ad units are meant to be sprinkled all over the Amazon site, and connect shoppers with offerings at third party shops. An interesting concept supporting the further expansion of Amazon’s growing ad empire. More on Product Ads (PDF).

    Sending Messages with the Reactive Super-Speed Electromagnet Dot Display

    Cool making of video, and super cool tech – Tech inventors Breakfast have created this Reactive Super-Speed Electromagnet Dot Display for the launch of TNT’s show “Perception”. Check out the making of video, installation demo, and press release.

    I love that this display is an actual physical, moving array of dots – each dot flips around on a little axel, and spectators can both see and hear the display reacting to them.

    For TNT’s newest crime-solving show Perception we revived a sign technology of yesteryear to create an anagram-finding experience on the streets of New York. Made up of over 40,000 physical dots spinning from black to white at 15 times faster than originally designed to, the screen not only reflects back a unique image of anyone walking by, but allows you to actually hear those movements thanks to its mechanical nature.

  • Printing On Fabric Using Sunlight And An iPhone

    Jesse Genet of Lumi is offering a new product that lets users print their pictures on fabric using the company’s Lumityper app, and printing with their Inkodye system. Very cool application of tech+crafts. Found via Alan and DesignTaxi. Support Jesse on Kickstarter.

    About the process:

    Taking photography out of the darkroom, Jesse Genet of Lumi has created a way for everyone to produce photographic prints on textiles and natural materials.

    Using the ‘Lumityper’ app, users can take a picture using their iPhone and convert it into a negative, then print the negative onto a transparent film.

    With the company’s ‘Inkodye’—a water-based dilute-able, mixable dye that develops in the sunlight—users can apply it on a fabric, place the negative on the fabric, leave the fabric out in the sun, and watch the print appear.

    Users would then have to wash the fabric with a special solution. Once fixed, the color becomes permanent and can go through repeated washes without fading.

    Sonar, You Should Prioritize Graph and Proximity Alerts via Klout Scores

    Ximena of Sonar recently posted a question on the Sonar facebook page asking for feedback on whether Sonar users want to know about their friends nearby. My thoughts:

    Yes, I definietly want to know which of my friends are nearby – but I already know that from other more established apps, namely Foursquare and Facebook. I dont care if Sonar is just going to be another random app that tells me which of my friends are nearby. I like Sonar because it suggests new friends, and seemingly inteligently ranks how it prensts people to me.

    The real value, the core of Sonar for me is the feeling that Sonar is actually intelligently sorting its social recommendations, and not just giving me random people (I get the unfortunate random person feeling from Banjo, though – which is why I rarely look at it). To continue to improve your sorting and percieved inteligence and trust, Sonar should start incorporating users Klout scores into its sorting. I want to see people around me who are both close and connected to my own social graph, and who are also influential and important in their own social graphs – those are the people with real “value”, and would keep me coming back to Sonar whenever I’m checking in and checking out venues.

    So, there’s my suggestion for Sonar, but it could be easily applied to the other emerging location based social apps too – looking at you Banjo, Highlight, Intro, and even Foursquare.

    A few brief notes from tonight’s Mobile Monday talk, at the New York Times Center.

    Best practices in mobile media consumption

    • Asish Patel, Head of Social Media at VICE Media
      • Favorite app is Twitter. With native applications, the key factor is providing a utility that can’t be found elsewhere, such as on the mobile Web.
      • How to make your apps “sticky”. Vice is seeing a huge bounce rate on mobile web, and the way to keep users coming back is to provide true utility. With mobile web applications, the key is leveraging the device capabilities and engaging users.
      • Find out what the value is to the user first, and then invest in native technologies. User experience is key.
      • Most compelling function of native apps for media companies for the public is content curation – personalized content curation, such as Stumble Upon and Flipboard. Send me new content based on what I’m looking at.
      • On a similar note, NY Times reports of the Vice empire being close to getting lots of cash.
      • Windows doesnt take a back seat, but how much budget we allocate for it ens up being decided by the amount of people using it, and what their demographic is.
    • Dave Pinke, Product Manager, Conde Nast
      • Favorite app is “Post It” – tracking notifications for packages.
      • In creating an app vs a mobile website, you’re taking a hit in running through the app stores. Apple takes a cut of the app sales. Financial Times example – app was siphoning off too much cash, so FT made an HTML5 web app and it’s great.
      • Wonder whether NY Times
    • Bill Readden, Thomson-Reuters Digital
      • Favorite mobile app – Twitter. Especially for Reuters, such a large news orginization must be on it. Since Reuters and other large news orginizations are basically “twitter before twitter”, being on Twitter nowadays is super important.
      • Target voice for Reuters is to use mobile tools to empower content creators.
      • Native apps vs mobile web – mobile web is coming up, but there’s still a lot with just HTML. Strategically it makes sense to do web, but as far as UX goes, native apps are still important.
      • How do you take into consideration the various consumption scenarios of a user when developing a mobile app? iPhone is more of a quick snack, and iPad is more for long form experiences.
      • NOT the right time to design for Windows Mango / Windows 8. Windows Live Tiles not really importnat enough just yet. There is huge value in it, but we’re not there. “Meh”.

    This takes the cake for user interface of the day.. week… Just a concept, but by levitating orbs, Jinha Lee allows users to intuitively manipulate a hybrid physical/virtual interface:

    Jinha Lee, from the Tangible Media Group of the MIT Media Lab, in collaboration with Rehmi Post, has been playing with the idea of manipulating real floating objects in 3-D space to create a truly tactile user interface. His prototype is called the ZeroN, and it will drop your jaw when you see it working for the first (and second and third) time.

    Congrats to the Fueled European crew for a great writeup in BDaily. They just moved into a great new office in Gateshead!

    I’m psyched to be working in Fueled’s NYC HQ as a Producer and Marketing Director.

    A New York based mobile design and development agency is the latest company to move into Gateshead’s Northern Design Centre.
    American agency Fueled has chosen the Northern Design Centre as the location for its first European office.
    The firm have provided their services to a number of high-profile worldwide brands such as Porsche, MTV, Ducati and Malibu.
    Their move is part of a three-year deal to take 452 sq ft of space in the centre, as they begin ambitious plans to grow business in the UK.
    Rob Palmer from Fueled said: “Since the launch of Fueled early last year, we have experienced rapid growth in employment, with the agency now standing at 22 fulltime staff.

    Great article about the power of shopper data and statistics for creepily optimizing shopping experiences. This is by I always use the universal club card number (local area code) 867-5309. Try it – there’s almost always a frequent shopper card registered with that number, so you can still get discounts without letting them track your personal buying habits – at least through a club card.

    From NYT:

    [Pole] ran test after test, analyzing the data, and before long some useful patterns emerged. Lotions, for example. Lots of people buy lotion, but one of Pole’s colleagues noticed that women on the baby registry were buying larger quantities of unscented lotion around the beginning of their second trimester. Another analyst noted that sometime in the first 20 weeks, pregnant women loaded up on supplements like calcium, magnesium and zinc. Many shoppers purchase soap and cotton balls, but when someone suddenly starts buying lots of scent-free soap and extra-big bags of cotton balls, in addition to hand sanitizers and washcloths, it signals they could be getting close to their delivery date.

    • Three major areas we’re working on this year – Open Graph, Mobile, Games
    • Open Graph. Plays to two audiences. People who use facebook – for them, it’s a tool to use applications that are deeply integrated with facebook. It’s based on the belief that facebook is a tool to tell your story, both using media on and off facebook. We think that open graph has the potential to take a new class of apps and pull them into the facebook space.
    • Vision for how developers should consider open graph opportunities: One of the design centers of open graph is to allow people to build cool new experiences, easily, with deep integration to facebook. No independent channel optimization is necessary.
    • Going forward, there will still be ways to optimize open graph. But fundamentally the use case will move to more of an integrated app communication channel.
    • Facebook wants Open Graph to be a simple process for developers, so that the focus can be put on developing great apps.
    • Games is very important to facebook. They are the shining example of how social integration and design can be transformative to an industry, such as gaming. Games also drive reengagement.

    AirBnB has been moving up in the the ranks of vacation rental sites lately. Recently, they had a great promo opportunity through the Conan O’Brien show. In a stroke of guerilla marketing genius, AirBnB got Team Coco to list the Conan O’Brien TV studio as a place to stay on AirBnB. No specific product placement or commercials, just an awesome, all encopassing product plug, endorsement, and extended, multi-night demonstration. Who could ask for anything better?

    This year the NYC Marathon went social.  In partnership with site Basno.com, they’re offering up digital marathon finisher badges, which confirm a person’s race finish, and provide an easy, social way to tell friends about the race. Badges seem to be the hot social currency lately, with many prominent sites beginning to offer users them as a way to encourage continued interaction, sharing, and healthy competition.

    A few top social sites using badges to increase social value:

    • FourSquare – originator of modern virtual badges, and creator of hundreds of them
    • Consmr – rewards users with badges for rating and commenting on consumer packaged goods
    • Gowalla – Similar, but with a smaller audience than 4sq. Larger badges and space for more creative designs.
    • Basno – “Give people goods with social and professional currency, and you will gain access to their influence. Basno equips brands and organizations with the tools to distribute valuable digital goods.
    • Miso – Social TV site rewards users with badges for watching particular shows.

    It’s tough to describe my friend Jill Donenfeld in just a few words. (Though impressive does come to mind…) By age 22, the personal chef and entrepreneur had already started her own business (The Culinistas) and written a cookbook (Mankafy Sakofo: Delicious Meals from Madagascar). Donenfeld founded The Culinistas in 2006 in New York City with the goal of bringing healthy, home cooked, customizable meals into the homes of busy professionals. The concept was a hit. Now, five years later, Donenfeld has expanded The Culinistas to Los Angeles and Chicago, and is coming out with her second cookbook: Party Like a Culinista (Lake Isle Press).

    Site Promotion Month Phase 2: Using the Hello Bar

    This month, as you may have noticed, I’ve been upping the ante for promoting my site. Sure, this is just my personal website, however I do put a good amount of effort into it, and it reflects my personal brand and skillset. Additionally, I’m in the middle of a project writing a unique, original blog post every single day, for an entire year. I started it in January, and am still going strong.

    Earlier this month I revamped my newletter system by making the switch from Google Feedburner Email Subscriptions over to MailChimp Email Subscriptions. So far it’s been great, and I’ll be posting a complete roundup of that experience shortly.

    Phase two of my renewed marketing drive is to deploy the “Hello Bar” notification bar at the top of my site. The Hello Bar allows me to grab users attention and drive towards more newsletter signups. For now, I’m deploying the Hello Bar code by way of embedding it in this very blog post – check the source code of this post and you’ll see the javascript. By doing this, I’m creating a limited run of the bar – as soon as this post is pushed off the front page of the blog, it will no longer display. It will only display where this blog post is shown – so it will keep on pushed back further into the archives. This allows me to only run the bar for a limited time, as well as present readers browsing through the archives a functional demo of the bar.

    Be sure to notice the Hello Bar at the top of this page, and of course, sign up for my MailChimp and RSS-driven newsletter.

    Becoming an AirBnB Superhost

    This summer since I’ve been traveling – a lot. However, I’m still keeping my apartment in NYC, because of its great location, and so I can have a place to crash and refuel between adventures. Keeping an apartment but not living in it full time is expensive, and luckily I’ve been able to rent my place out quite reliably on new apartment rental site AirBnB. Over the past year, I’ve rented to very many guests, and apparently have gotten lots of good reviews. In a recent exchange with some friends at AirBnB, I was invited to apply for their AirBnb Superhost program, which gives some added services to their power users. I just submitted my application and I’m not sure if I’ll be accepted or not, but for now, here’s what I wrote in my application – along with my intro video.
